Accused kidnapper denied bail


JOHN JUDE Arjoon appeared in court on Monday charged with the kidnapping and unlawful killing of accountant Mary Baldeo-Waheed, who died of massive head injuries sustained after she jumped out of a vehicle to escape her attacker.


Arjoon, 23, of Diamond Village, near San Fernando, did not have an attorney when he appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates’s Court before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington.


In addition to the indictable charges of manslaughter and kidnapping of Baldeo-Waheed, Wellington read 38 other charges which alleged that Arjoon kidnapped, beat, assaulted and robbed nine other women over a six-month period in South and Central Trinidad.


Baldeo-Waheed, 33, of Lendore Village, Chaguanas, was kidnapped on April 29. In an escape bid, she jumped out of a moving car on the M2 Ring Road, La Romaine, and sustained massive head injuries. She was hospitalised, but succumbed to her injuries the next day.


Six traffic offences were also read against the accused, including driving without a licence, driving without a licence plate, and dangerous driving.


Arjoon was arrested on July 6 at his mother’s home at Rancho Quemado, He is also jointly charged with Rendell Leonard for allegedly committing robbery with violence. Charges were laid by Cpl Reynold Phillip of the San Fernando CID.


Magistrate Wellington denied bail and remanded the accused in custody to July 21.
