Emily halts local sports

THE THREAT of Tropical Storm Emily put a damper on proceedings yesterday in the local sporting calendar.

As a result, the first day of the National Long Course Swimming Championships, as well as action in the Evian-sponsored National Tennis Championships and the Sportworld Super League were cancelled.

The annual Long Course event was due to get going last evening at the 50-metre Marlins Swim Pool in Westmoorings. But yesterday’s weather bulletin forced the organisers to delay the start by 24 hours, hence the meet will get going today.

Also the Evian tournament officials decided that yesterday’s scheduled women’s doubles final, the mixed doubles quarterfinals and the men’s doubles semis were too risky to be staged under cloudy conditions at the Public Courts, Princes Building Ground, Port-of- Spain.

Those matches will be held today.

And all matches in round nine of the Super League have been rescheduled to July 27, as the expected passage of the storm saw the organisers with no choice but to cancel proceedings yesterday.
