Ames misses British Open cut
ST ANDREWS, Scotland: Trinidad and Tobago’s Stephen Ames missed the cut at the British Golf Open after once again fighting a losing battle on the back nine to card a two-over 74 in the second round yesterday. Seemingly en route to a solid under-par finish which would have kept him alive in the tournament, the 41-year old incredibly bogeyed the last four holes on the final nine, to plunge from one-under and finish with an overall score of six-over 150. The score left Ames 126th on the leaderboard, after he started the day 116th. After a frustrating opening round when he carded a four-over 76 on Thursday, Ames rebounded in style yesterday with a fine performance over the front nine to raise his hopes of qualification. He safely parred the first four holes before finding birdie on the par-5 fifth and after parring holes six and seven, closed out the front nine with a brace of birdies. Starting three-under on the final nine, Ames’ game fell apart for the second successive day. After pars on the 10th and 11th, he bogeyed the par-4 12th but recovered well to make pars on the next two holes. Ames who has struggled all season on the PGA Tour, then spectacularly bogeyed the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes to lose his momentum and crash out of the tournament. This is the third time this season Ames has missed the cut after being eliminated from the Nissan Open back in February and the Players Championship in March. World number one Tiger Woods had no such problems as he raced to a five-stroke lead after shooting a superb five-under 67, following up his 66 in the opening round. Colin Montgomerie moved into second place with a 66 while world number two Vijay Singh took closer order with a second successive 69, to be fourth on the leaderboard.
