Jack gets three U-17 games in ‘Poor Man’s Venice’

FIFA vice-president Jack Austin Warner recommended Iquitos as a topurnament venue for this year’s FIFA Under-17 World Championships in Peru.

And three matches including two quarter-finals will take place in the city popularly called "poor man’s Venice."

Warner said: "Three matches will do more for the people of Peru and moreso for the people of Iquitos than you will ever believe."

Iquitos is situated in the middle of the Peruvian jungle and the mighty Amazon River runs through the town, and is reachable by river or air.

The Iquitos venue is about 82 percent completed according to Warner and will be ready for action by next month, one month before the championship kicks off.

Fans will see Peru take on Costa Rica in a first round game, and there is a possibility they will see the mighty Brazil in action.

Staging of the championship will be the first time in 10 years for a South America country since Ecuador were host in 1995.

Warner, chairman of the FIFA events committee, recently conducted an inspection tour of the area along with the President of Peru Alejandro Toledo while there for the official draw for the series which took place at Museo Tumbas Reales del Setor de Sipon, in the city of Chiclayo, northern Peru on Saturday.

Recommending Iquitos to FIFA president Joseph Sepp Blatter, Warner told him, " it would be a wonderful opportunity for FIFA to demonstrate our commitment to development of football in all corners of the world."

And he added: "The boost that it will also give to FIFA as a body that cares about bringing football to the people cannot be ever quantified for the good of the game."

During his 45-minute journey to the stadium in Iquitos, Warner said he travelled through streets lined with scores of fans of all ages waving banners and screaming in support of their place as a venue.

"It turned out to be a historic event as I was told that never before had such an overwhelming response from the people occurred for this type of occasion."

Warner was later a private dinner guest of President Toledo, the first indigenous Peruvian president.

And Warner who is also CONCACAF president, returns to the United States for the semi-finals and final of this year’s Gold Cup.
