‘Calypso Girls’ win 3rd Time


JUNIOR Trinidad and Tobago "Calypso Girls" netballers scraped home to a 45-44 victory over Botswana in second round action at the 5th World Youth Netball Championships 2005 at the Broward Convention Centre, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, yesterday.


It was their third victory, and second in a row at the championships accomplished in nail-biting fashion.


The young Trinidadians led 11-8 at the end of the opening quarter, and held a 21-17 advantage at the half-time interval.


But the Botswana youngsters rallied strongly in the third period, outscoring the "Calypso Girls" netballers 16-13 to trail by one goal 34-33 at the end.


From the start of the final stanza it was game on, and the teams traded goals until the final whistle with the "Calypso Girls" netballers just managing to hold on for the victory.


Candace Nelson was deadly accurate scoring 30 goals from 33 attempts (91 percent), while goal-attack Afeisha Noel netted 16 of 21 attempts (76 percent).


The Trinidad and Tobago youngsters shot 76 percent for the match, scoring all 14 of their penalty shots, while Botswana shot 85 netting eight of their nine penalties.

On Wednesday night, Trinidad and Tobago had to fight off a determined Malaysia who led by five goals entering the final quarter, rallying strongly for a 48-46 victory, outscoring their opponents 16-14.


Goal-shoot Nelson scored 36 of 41 attempts (88 percent) and goal-attack Noel 12 of 15 (80 per cent). The TT girls scored 86 percent including 14 of 16 penalty shots, while Malaysia scored 75 per cent, sinking 13 pf 14 penalties.
