‘Silver Ferns’ new youth n-ball princesses
NEW ZEALAND are the new princesses of world netball. They won the title by beating England 53-39in the final at the Broward County Convention Centre, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Sunday night. The "Silver Ferns" took control from the start and never relinquished their grip of the game, Goal-shoot Jessica Tuki scored 25 goals from 35 attempts (71 per cent), switching positions with Goal-attack Maria Tutaia (who scored 28 of 34 attempts (82 per cent) at the third quarter. The game was over as a contest from the second period when the "Silver Ferns" held a nine-goal advantage. At the end of the opening stanza, New Zealand led England 13-6, and at the half the score was 26-17. Each time the English made an attempt at a rally, the "Silver Ferns" were able to repel them and led 39-27 at the end of the third quarter before blowing the game wide open in the final stanza for their 14-goal victory. English goal-shoot Louisa Brownfield netted 16 of 23 attempts (70 per cent), before being replaced in the fourth quarter. Goal-attack Pamela Cookey had 17 goals from 23 attempts (74 per cent) before moving to goal-shoot in the final period, while Asha Tett who came in at goal-attack got six goals from eight attempts (75 percent). The "Silver Ferns" shot 77 per cent as a team, scoring 12 of their 14 penalties, while England had 72 per cent shooting, hitting 14 of their 15 penalty shots. Earlier, dethroned champins Australia clobbered Jamaica 61-44 to fill third place leaving the "Sunshine Girls" fourth, highest finish by a Caribbean team. Goal-shoot Kate Beveridge scored 33 goals from 40 attempts (83 per cent) and goal-attack Natalie Medhurst netted 28 of 31 attempts (90 per cent) for the Aussies, while goal-shoot Romelda Aiken scored 36 of 42 attempts (86 per cent), with goal-attack Latoya Thomas getting six of seven attempts (55 per cent) before being replaced by Jodi-Ann Ffrench in the third quarter, who scored two goals from four attempts (50 per cent).
