Flying Millie cruises in Oaks

FLYING MILLIE made almost every metre of the 2000 metres distance in running eight rivals into the ground in winning the Fortuner IMV Oaks Classic on Toyota Day at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, yesterday.

Sent off as only the second favourite, jockey Ricardo Jadoo soon had the Jamaican-bred filly at the head of the nine-horse field, and pre-race favourite Priceless Fame loomed large 1000 metres out, but soon backed out beaten and managed to finish only fourth.

Really Quiet, always in mid-division ran on for second without threatening the winner who was four and three-quarter lengths clear at the finish, while Condoleeza ran on for third. But in the co-feature, the Lexus President’s Cup over 19000 metres, it took the photo-finish camera to decide the winner.

When the results were flashed on the screen, it was triple crown winner of two years ago Top Of The Class who got his neck in front of Miss Lover Lover with Fantastic Story a further head back in third.

At the off, Carnival Messiah scooted into the lead and never relinquished it until 200 metres out when the top three finishers pounced.

Top Of The Class got first run, but both Miss Lover Lover and Fantastic Story came with a final burst, but Venezuelan rider Wilmer Galviz managed to keep the Freshly Squeezed/Crescendo offspring ahead.

Dividends on the day were quite good throughout, with Mayaro Breeze rewarding backers with $57.80 to win.

But the day’s biggest trifecta and superfecta were paid out in the Camry West Indies bred three-year-old maidens race over 1350 metres.

In this race, Fresh Wings passed the post first but was later relegated to second after an objection, and Del Mar Gold which finished fourth was disqualified.

New winner was Integrated promoted from second and paid $11.70 and $4.30 on the tote, and together with Fresh Wings and third placed Golden Gump, the trifecta payout was $9, 268.00 with the superfecta paying $8,363.00.

Venezuelan jockey Wilmer Galviz took his total winners to 26 with two more yesterday as he heads toward the championship title.

And champion trained John O’Brien saddled two more winners for 28 so far this season.

Glenn Mendez also saddled two winners yesterday to remain six behind O’Brien in the race to the trainers title.
