Relay girls earn 4x100m silver

TRINIDAD AND Tobago collected a silver medal, in the girls’ 4x100-metre relay, as the eighth Pan American Junior Athletics Championships ended at Windsor, Canada on Sunday night.

After Rhonda Watkins copped gold in the high jump and bronze in the long jump, the relay girls ensured that the national team will return home with three pieces of silverware.

On Sunday night, the quartet of Cadajah Spencer, Sade St Louis, Jurnelle Francis and Monique Cabral crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 45.45 seconds, behind the United States, who clocked 43.97.

In fact, the Americans made a clean sweep of the relays — the boys’ and girls’ 4x100m and 4x400m respectively.

In the boys’ 4x100m, the TT foursome of Keron Anthony, Keston Bledman, Kervin Morgan and Marcus Duncan placed fourth in 40.81, while the Americans won in 39.36.

St Louis, Shari Sampson, Janelle Clarke and Latasha Roach could only finish fourth in the 4x400m, in a time of 3:46.97, with the US team cruising to victory in 3:32.82. But the TT boys quartermile relay team of Jamil James, Damon Douglas, Renny Quow and Morgan were disqualified, with the Americans prevailing in 3:05.34.

Pilar McShine was not amongst the starters in the 5000-metre final while Dellon Williams was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.81m, with Cuban Denny Fernandez Deraliz claiming gold in 16.80m.

And Garvin Nero finished ninth in the 1500m final in a slow time of four minutes 3.12 seconds, with Canadian Mike Woods setting a meet record while copping gold in 3:45.72.
