Maraval youths get athletic schols

TEN of this country’s young budding track and field athletes were proud beneficaries of athletic scholarships to the Concorde Athletic Club, courtesy the Maraval Sports Foundation, a non-governmental organisation whose mission is to enhance the development of the nation’s youth.

Yesterday the athletes selected from the various Primary Schools in and around the Maraval community, received their award at a gala ceremony at the Audio/Visual room of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, watched by their families, friends and well-wishers.

Among them were sibblings Shaquilla and Shaquille Taylor, both of the Maraval Roman Catholic Primary School.

Shaquille Antoine, Davidson Lawrence, Shania Charles, Avanelle Roberts, Jamal Solomon, Jason Lewis, Jovan-ji Kaur Smith and 11-year old Melissa Jamie Narine made up the other awardees.

Clement Mitchell, a member of the foundation told the gathering that the scholarships were fully paid for, and were expected necessities such as track and running shoes, clothing to be used for training purposes and money for transportation to and from the venue.

He urged the students to do their best and make use of the opportunity that has been afforded to them.

Mitchell told the young athletes they should be positive in everything they do and get involved in, if they are to success.

Brian Lewis, general secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee, however, expressed the view that sports can only be a successful tool by the one who uses it properly.
