TT, Guatemala, Jamaica in U-15 semis

TRINIDAD and Tobago under-15 footballers advanced to the semi-finals of the inaugural Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Youth Cup with a 2-1 victory over Suriname at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna, last night.

And they will now face Guatemala, who were emphatic 4-0 winners over St Vincent at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday.

Also at the same venue yesterday, Jamaica moved into the final four with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Martinique. They will now play the winners of last night’s match between Canada and the Netherlands Antilles, at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago.

Both semi-finals will be played at the Hasely Crawford Stadium tomorrow, with the first from 5 pm and the other two hours later.

After both teams struggled to come to terms with a slippery surface, following afternoon showers, right-back Sheldon Bateau guided his header past Suriname’s goalkeeper Romario Funkel in the 56th minute and, in the 80th, Mark Rivers sent his right-side centre to fellow substitute Franz Husbands to tap home from close range.

Rosendo Dharson pulled one back for Suriname in the 89th minute, weaving his way through the defence and shooting past keeper Jesse Fullerton,.

Guatemala had little worry against an over-matched St Vincent squad, coached by former national tactician Zoran Vranes.

Jose Figueroa’s opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Angelo Padilla rifled his right-footer home in the 38th while, Cesar Diaz tapped home in the 59th, and Aroche will complete a good afternoon’s work with a 63rd minute goal, from a right-side free-kick.

In the other game, Jamaica survived a third minute scare when Martinique striker Peter Louise watched his shot rebound off an upright, and in the 16th, prolific Jamaican forward Dever Orgill also saw his shot crash off the bar. But after three missed chances by Orgill in the 27th, 50th and 52nd, strike partner Christopher Waugh hit a right footer in the 79th for the only goal of the match.
