‘Lions’ vs WASA knockout final
THE "EASTERN Lions" Joe Public booked a spot in the final of the Sportworld Super League knockout tournament after whipping Stokelyvale 2-0 at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago, yesterday. Ex-national midfielder Lyndon ‘Chubby’ Andrews put the Lions in front after 16 minutes while striker Carlington Smith sealed the win in the 80th minute. The current holders will now face WASA Clean & White in Friday’s final, at a venue to be determined. WASA progressed to the final after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Couva Players United at the WASA Ground, St Joseph. The WASA men dominated play on their home turf, and it was no surprise when they took the lead after 55 minutes, when substitute striker Kirth Hutchings dribbled past Sterling Arjoon on the left and his centre was headed home by an unmarked Billy Dee Scantlebury. And 20 minutes later, Kevon Henry’s deep right-side centre met another substitute Stephen Pierre, who out-muscled Couva’s goalkeeper Steve Mejias before sending the ball trickling into the net. The focus will switch to the playoff competition today, with the four losing quarter-finalists in action from 4 pm. At Gilbert Park, Couva, PLIPDECO Caroni meet Maraval Youth Academy while Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix hosts Media 21 FC at Canaan, Bon Accord, Tobago.
