TT are WI cricket league queens
TRINIDAD and Tobago women cricketers celebrated a nail-biting three-run victory to dethrone St Vincent and the Grenadines in their West Indies Women Cricket Federation League final at the Arnos Vale I ground, Kingston yesterday. TT’s skipper Stephanie Power effected the stumping of St Vincent’s reliable opener Cordell Jack off Envis Williams three runs short of what would have been a sensational victory for the homesters. The Trinidadians kept their nerves and battled against the odds to recapture the WIWCF League crown which they last won in Grenada in 2003. Set a target of 118 for victory, Jack was St Vincent and Grenadines mainstay and batted right through the innings, only to be dismissed when the victory was in sight for 46. While it was heart-breaking for the Vincentians, the TT women danced for joy Carnival-style when Power whipped off the bails to leave Jack and her team a disconsolate lot. TT’s two youngest bowlers Anisa Mohammed, 16, had a spell of 10-0-24-1 and Kirbyna Alexander, 18, had figures of 10-2-13-1 and were very impressive not giving away a single wide. But it was Envis Williams who took two for 28, Jade Chadee two for 18 and Felicia Cummings also two for 18 who wrecked the Vincentians, with the last five wickets tumbling for 22 runs. The experienced Brenda Solozano-Rodney was TT’s outstanding batswoman with 44. She was the third wicket to fall with the score on 96, and shared a 67-run third wicket partnership with Erica George 14. But TT lost seven wickets for the addition of a mere eight runs, as E DeGrades took four wickets for 26 runs and Cleo Hoyte three for 21 to undermine the middle and lower order batting.
