Sarwan fails as Gloucester are relegated

LONDON: West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan failed on a day when his English County Gloucestershire were relegated to Division Two yesterday.

Playing against Middlesex at Bristol on the opening day of a new series of Championship matches, Sarwan was dismissed cheaply for four but Gloucestershire still managed to reach 333 all out.

Malinga Bandara top-scored with 70 while Steve Adshead hit 59 and Alex Gidman, 57.

Alan Richardson and Jamie Dalrymple grabbed four wickets each to lead the Middlesex attack.

However, Middlesex still picked up two bowling points meaning that Gloucestershire cannot now overtake them in the Championship table.

Gloucestershire are eighth in the standings on 89.5 points while Middlesex are sixth on 154.5 points.

Middlesex ended on 20 without loss.

At New Road, West Indies all-rounder Chris Gayle grabbed two for 16 for Worcestershire as Leicestershire reached 342 for seven on the opening day of their match.

John Maunders top scored with 148.

At the Riverside, Gareth Breese scored 13 as Durham were dismissed for 230 against Derbyshire, with South African batsman Dale Benkenstein hitting 49.

Derbyshire were 36 for two at the close.
