Sui, Dean in Cuba badminton final


TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Justin Siu and Earnesto Dean assured themselves of silver medals yesterday when they smashed their way into the Boys Under-19 doubles final at the Caribbean Regional Badminton Competition (CAREBACO) being held at the Havana Kid Chocolate Multipurpose Hall, Cuba.


Siu and Dean overpowered their Mexican counterparts Daniel Guz and Ignacio Arzola 15-8, 15-7 in the first round and then beat top Jamaican pair of Ryan Chung and Chadwick Parsons 15-4, 15-4.


Chung and Parsons had knocked out TT’s Mitra Ramcharran and Narin Bhagwandeen 15-9, 15-10 in the quarter-finals.


Siu and Dean will play Cuban pair of Jose Luis Gonzalez and Alexandro Reyes in the final today.


The Cubans outplayed TT’s Shiva Persad and Hayden Bishop 15-3, 15-6 in the quarter-finals and then took care of the other top Jamaican pair of Vishwanath Tolan and Nicholas Robinson 15-13, 15-4 in the other semi-final.


Robinson and Tolan created the big upset when they outplayed Cubans Erick Callelo and Javier Torres 15-11, 7-15, 15-13 in the "quarters".


In the Girls Under-19, KerryAnn Quan Chee made it to the semi-finals before bowing out to Cuba’s Maria Lucia Hernandez at 1-11, 1-11.


Quan Chee whipped Tara Hoo 15-4, 15-1 in the first round and then smashed Jamaica’s Geordine Henry in the quarter-finals.


Hernandez knocked out TT’s Vaeda Solomon 11-0, 11-0 in their first round clash and then outplayed Mexico’s Rosina Nunez.


TT’s junior champion Nekeisha Blake had the toughest first round match-up against Cuba’s Mariladys Diaz and took an early exit 13-11, 7-11, 5-11.


Diaz, however, lost 11-3, 3-11, 2-11 to Mexico’s Naty Rangel, who will now play for the gold medal against Quan Chee’s conqueror Hernandez.


In the Girls Under-19 doubles competition, TT-s Blake and Quan Chee lost their semi-final match 7-15, 4-15 to Jamaica’s champion pair of Shenelle Peart and Shawnekka Phillips.


Cuba’s Mariladys Diaz and Maria Lucia Hernandez also made it through to the final.


In the Boys Under-19 singles, TT’s Siu and Ramcharran advanced to the quarter-finals.


Siu beat Mexico’s Daniel Cruz 15-8, 17-15 and Jamaica’s Nicholas Robinson 15-9, 15-10.


The TT champion had no answer for Cuba’s Osleni Guerrero and folded up at 2-15, 0-15 ,


Guerrero also took care of compatriot Jose Luis Gonzalez who had beaten TT’s Narin Bhagwandeen 15-6, 15-2 in the first round.
