Greene upsets cycling field

ELIJAH GREENE came out of the dark to win the Computer Power and Supplies National Criterium Cycling Champion-ship around King George V Park, Port-of-Spain yesterday.

The powerfully built cyclist flashed past the finish line after Stephen Mangroo had dominated the race.

Greene, who rode for the Trinity Wheelers completed the 25-lap sprint in a quick 41 minutes and 14 seconds. Brothers Adam and Joshua Alexander secured the second and third places respectively.

At the start it was Guyana-born Mangroo and the Alexander brothers, riding for Team Trek who took the front. But Mangroo, who won last week’s criterium at Chaguaramas could not hold off the challenge by Greene at the end and faded.

Veteran road race champion Ronald Peters was again among the winners as he returned a time of 23 minutes and 26.67 seconds in the 60-kilometre sprint with another commanding ride.

Peter De Silva claimed the runners-up position and the right to be second best among the Veterans 60 years and over.

In the category for Veterans 50 years and over it was Mark Massiah who disposed of the field to claim the top spot. Massiah covered the distance of 60 kilometres but he had to keep a close eye out for his main rival Kent Luces.

The Veterans 40 years and over had to complete a gruelling distance of 120 kilometres and Gregory D’Andrade emerged the winner.

D’Andrade also returned an impressive time leading a number of top challengers including Richard Ramchand, who finished second. Among the Juniors, there was no surprise when Marc Codrington crossed the finish line ahead of the pack. Codrington could credit his success to his stint at the recent Junior Cycling Championship as he showed almost total dominance in the 120-kilometre race.

Dariel Perreira, who was also on the team which represented this country at the championship, finished behind him in second, but will be satisfied to be among the country’s top two junior cyclists.
