Mucurapo cage ‘Tigers’ in North Zone
MUCURAPO opened their defence of the Secondary Schools Football League North Zone with a convincing 3-1 triumph over the "Westmoorings Tigers" St Anthony’s in the opening match of a double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. Also at the Mucurapo venue yesterday, QRC got two goals in the space of a minute to defeat Malick 2-0. In front of a crowd estimated at 5,000, Mucurapo went ahead in the 20th minute courtesy midfielder Khaleem Hyland but fellow Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 player Lester Peltier equalised for the Tigers with a penalty ten minutes later. St Anthony’s joy was shortlived though as national Under-20 midfielder Atullah Guerra restored the lead in the 37th, with Kevon Piper sealing the win for Mucurapo in the 61st. The QRC-Malick en-counter was a dull, uninspiring affair for the most part, but a pair of goals within the space of a minute was enough for the Royalians to prevail. In the first minute of first-half stoppage time, the Malick defence failed to clear a bouncing ball, and Kisean Worrell slotted his right-footer past the reach of goalkeeper Gabriel Daniel. A minute later, the Malick defence were unable to start an attack from the back, with Mark Brewster rifling the loose ball home from 20 metres out. Malick earned a 68th penalty following a hand-ball incident, but a tame right-footer by national Under-15 defender Robert Primus was parried into safety by Keron Superville. The day’s other encounter between the "Dial Dynamos" and St George’s in the East Zone did not come off at Barataria. South Zone action commences today with a double-header at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, with Vessigny meeting Fyzabad at 3 pm and, two hours later, 2004 winners Naparima battle St Benedict’s.
