Ames three-over in Canadian Open

VANCOUVER: Trinidad and Tobago’s Stephen Ames had a rough time in the first round of the US$4.9 million Bell Canadian Open on Thursday.

The 41-year old, ranked 45th on the PGA Tour, carded a three-over 73 to finish 72nd on the leaderboard, eight strokes off co-leaders Mark Calcavecchia and Lucas Glover who were 5-under.

Ames shot five bogeys and only two birdies as he experienced some difficulty in navigating the course at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club.

After parring the first two holes, Ames picked up bogeys on the par-three third and the par-four fifth and though he birdied the par-four sixth, another bogey on the seventh left him 2-over at the end of the front nine.

On the back nine, Ames again struggled as he opened with bogeys on the tenth and 11th, both par-fours.

He consolidated with a birdie on the 13th but could not repeat this on the remaining five holes and finished at his eventual three-over.
