Yorke scores again but Sydney lose
SYDNEY: Trinidad and Tobago captain Dwight Yorke scored one goal and set up another but Sydney FC lost for the second time in as many matches on Friday. Playing at the Aussie Stadium in the Hyundai A-League, the 33-year old Yorke scored in the 72nd minute but the Central Coast Mariners scored an injury-time winner to steal a 3-2 verdict. With Sydney FC trailing 1-2, Yorke produced a bit of magic to level the scores. In a move starting from the half way line, David Carney released Ufuk Talay down the right side before Talay raced down field and threaded a perfect through ball onto Yorke’s feet who made no mistake in finding the back of the nets. Earlier, it was another piece of Yorke brilliance that enabled Sydney to take the lead in the 13th minute. Yorke latched onto a ball from Carney on the right side, weaved his way between two defenders before sending a pass through to Andrew Packer who hit the target from point blank range. Stewart Petrie evened the score five minutes later when he converted a penalty awarded to the Mariners after a collision in the box between Sydney FC captain Mark Rudan and Mariners midfielder Tom Pondeljak. Andre Gumprecht then sent the Mariners ahead in the 35th minute with a powerful strike to give the Mariners the lead at the interval. The match seemed headed for a draw after Yorke’s equaliser but Mariner’s captain Noel Spencer took a 92nd-minute free kick which ricocheted off defender Alvin Ceccoli into the Sydney goal. It was an improved performance from Sydney as Carney, Yorke and Packer started the game after coming off the bench in the loss to the Newcastle Jets last week.
