The boxing show goes on

THE SHOW will go on. A defiant Boxu Potts insisted yesterday that the four women’s title fights tomorrow will be sanctioned by the Women’s International Boxing Council (WIBC).

On Tuesday, Don "Moose" Lewis, president of the WIBC had threatened to withold his support of the world championship bouts after a disagreement with Potts and the promoters of the card, ABC Boxing Academy.

However yesterday Potts, speaking from his Finland Street, St James office said he expected Lewis to arrive in Trinidad today to fulfil his role as fight supervisor.

"He knows that he cannot withold sanction. He has a contract with the Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board and if he breaks it the WIBC cannot stage another fight anywhere in the world," said a confident Potts.

In the main bout over ten rounds Canada based Trinidad and Tobago boxer Lisa "Bad News" Brown fights Jackie Chavez.

The card is being promoted as "Trinidad and Tobago versus the United States" and features three other top locally based fighters.

Welterweight Iva Weston comes up against Elizabeth Mooney (US); middleweight Scroller Carrington matches fists with Teres Perozzi (US); and welterweight Giselle Salandy tackles Terri Blair (US).

Heavyweight Kim "Bone Crusher" Quashie fights world ranked Guyanese Pamela London while Vicki Boodram is matched against Stephanie George, also of Guyana in the undercard.

Potts said yesterday the Guyanese boxers are due in Trinidad today following the arrival of the American boxers earlier in the week.

Yesterday Brown, originally from Laven-tille returned to her hometown to distribute tickets for the fight to young people at the Desperadoes Panyard. She is confident of defeating Chavez who is equally certain of coming out on top in their much anticipated bout. The card will also be broadcast live on the internet and filmed for distribution throughout the world at a later date.

It is said to be the biggest women’s boxing card ever staged with four fighters being crowned world champions on the night.

The presentation has received the support of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs and HiLo Food Stores.
