Walsh, Viv, Richie for 20/20 clash

FORMER WEST Indies captains Courtney Walsh, Sir Vivian Richards and Richie Richardson are among the former regional cricket greats expected to roll back the clock and participate in a 20/20 limited-overs match.

A clash between the former West Indies team and an ex-England XI will hold centre stage at Progress Park, St Andrew, Grenada on October 16.

Under the theme "Virgin Cricket Classics", a five-day series of activities will be staged in the Spice Isle, including a mini-cricket tournament for Grenadian schoolchildren between the ages of 11 and 13.

Among the retired players expected to don the whites are Joel Garner, Roger Harper, Curtly Ambrose, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, with the English team comprising the likes of Allan Lamb, John Emburey, Derek Underwood, Bill Athey, John Morris, David Lawrence, David Capel, John Lever and Warren Hegg.

Ironically, both WI and England ex-players participated in two limited-overs matches at the National Stadium in St George’s, Grenada last year.

The stadium was severely damaged during the passage of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 and, during the five-day series, the cricketers and journalists will have ample opportunities to witness the reconstruction work as well as the sights and sounds of Grenada.
