Guyana beat Jamaica by seven runs

BRIDGETOWN: Strong bowling by Mahendra Nagamooto lifted Guyana to a seven-run victory over Jamaica yesterday in the KFC Cup regional limited overs cricket competition at Weymouth Ground.

Guyana batted first and made 219 all out in 49.3 overs. In reply, Jamaica made 212 for seven wickets in 50 overs.

Nagamootoo, a veteran leg-spinner had two wickets for 34 off ten overs, while spinner Neil McGarrell had two wickets for 37 off ten overs at the end of the Jamaica innings.

They were good enough to turn back a brilliant innings of 91 not out by Marlon Samuels.

The right-handed batsman blasted two sixes and a four. Samuels, who has been named to the West Indies team to tour Australia, came to the crease at the fall of the first wicket and stayed until the end. He added a brilliant partnership of 105 with Tamar Lambert, who made 48 off 70 balls. They took the score 73 for three to 178 for four, before the innings lost momentum.

"Our bowlers came through for us and I’m really delighted that we won under pressure," said Guyana captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul. "We were under pressure and Nagamootoo and Carrel proved their worth."

The defeat was Jamaica’s third in as many matches, and they are now in danger of being knocked out of the tournament for the second straight year. Guyana now have two wins and one tie.

Earlier in the day, Guyana total was built around forthright innings of 63 from vice- captain Ramnaresh Sarwan.

It came off 85 balls and included six fours. At the end of the innings, Nagamootoo blasted three sixes in making 31 off 17 balls to lift his team over 200.
