Bajans hold on for one-run win
BRIDGETOWN: Liam Sebastien and captain Rawl Lewis led a brave Windward Islands comeback yesterday but Barbados held on to score a tense one-run victory in the third round KFC Cup regional limited overs cricket match. Sebastien hit an unbeaten 43 off 39 balls and Lewis contributed 38. But the previously unbeaten Windward Islands were left one short at 219 for nine off 50 overs. The 21-year-old Sebastien and Lewis added 81 for a seventh wicket after Barbados appeared to be coasting when the visitors slipped to 129 for six in the 33rd over. Pacer Corey Collymore bowled Lewis with the final ball of the 48th over to set up a thrilling finale with 11 runs needed from the last two overs with three wickets standing. Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn claimed a wicket in an impressive penultimate over that cost just four. West Indies fast bowler Collymore then followed Benn’s lead with the scalp of Mervin Matthew in a miserly final over. The last ball arrived with six still needed and an edged four from Alvin La Feuille, who previously struggled to get bat to ball, was not enough. Collymore took three for 44 off ten overs. Earlier, Barbados’ total of 220 all out off 48.4 overs was dominated by a topscore of 71 from opener Dale Richards. The stylish right-hander hit six fours off 127 balls. He shared an opening stand of 77 with left-hander Martin Nurse, who hit 32. But only Ryan Hinds, with a run-a-ball 33, capitalised on the good start as the Windwards’ spinners stifled the middle and lower order. Orlanzo Jackson earned three for 35 off ten overs. Fellow leg-spinner Lewis took two for 34 off 8.4 and off-spinner Sebastien grabbed two for 42 off ten overs.
