Lequay questions Bajan’s selection

FORMER West Indies Cricket Board director Alloy Lequay has questioned the selection of Barbadian all-rounder Dwayne Smith for the upcoming three-Test tour of Australia.

The 22-year-old got the nod in the full strength 15-man West Indies squad even though not having impressed in the recent two-Test tour of Sri Lanka where a second string Windies squad lost the series 2-0.

"Dwayne Smith is no different from or better than Ricardo Powell," Lequay said.

"We have been told that both have potential which we accept but they have failed to produce at the higher level. Ricardo has had his opportunities, he had one big hundred when he started and all the other opportunities after that he has just wasted them because of indisciplined batting and bad shot selection."

He stressed, "Dwayne Smith is a carbon-copy of Ricardo."

In seven Tests to date, Smith has scored just 268 runs at an average of 29.78 despite scoring a century in his debut Test — an unbeaten 105 against South Africa last year.

Since then, the attacking right hander has struggled, failing to register a single Test half century. Lequay, who recently stepped down as Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board president, also questioned the omission of Windies "A" team captain Daren Ganga.

He said he understood that Ganga had been omitted for non-cricketing reasons and planned to investigate the issue.

"In the only match that they had in Barbados in preparation for the team being selected, Daren got a hundred in one innings and 37 in the next innings so the form was there and they must have seen his confidence," Lequay pointed out.

The West Indies leave for Australia later this month.
