San Juan, Naparima near finish line
SAN JUAN and Naparima reached within touching distance of the respective East and South Zone titles in the British Gas Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), following yesterday’s round of matches in the North, South, Central and East. Captain Elijah Manners notched a hat-trick, while Anthony Guppy and Rodell Elcock added one apiece as San Juan swept past the "Dial Dynamos" Arima 5-1 at Bourg Mulatresse. San Juan now hold a seven-point lead over the "Blue Thunder" El Dorado with three matches remaining. Jamal Gay and captain Keston Henry were on target as hosts "El Do" defeated Malabar 2-1 while dethroned champions, the "Green Machine" St Augustine got a 3-0 default win over St George’s. Like San Juan, Naps continued their unbeaten run with a 1-0 triumph over Fyzabad at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. St Benedict’s jumped to second place with a 2-1 win away to Princes Town while Mayaro and Moruga battled to a 2-2 draw at Mayaro. Fatima took full advantage of a bye to Mucurapo to widen their narrow lead in the North to three points when, at the QRC Ground, the Fatima lads edged hosts QRC 2-1. St Anthony’s, who have been inconsistent this season, took out their frustrations on Tranquillity, handing Tranquil their 10th loss of the season — 11-0 at the St Anthony’s Ground. And Malick, another team who have been hot and cold this year, cruised past St Mary’s 4-1 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. The dogfight for top spot in Central continued, with Presentation and Carapichaima remaining locked on 19 points apiece, with "Pres" holding a superior goal difference, by virtue of an 8-0 thrashing of Chaguanas Senior in Chaguanas. Carapichaima whipped Marabella 3-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva while Tabaquite earned their first win of the year — 1-0 at home to Union Claxton Bay. There were no matches in the sister isle Tobago yesterday but, from 5 pm at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet today, the mouth-watering clash featuring Scarborough and Signal Hill will take place. Matches in the North, South, Central and East Zones will be contested tomorrow.
