Mucurapo stay on course

TRINIDAD and Tobago Under-20 midfielder Atullah Guerra netted a hat-trick, while Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 defender Khaleem Hyland added two, as Mucurapo crushed St Mary’s 7-0 in the North Zone of the British Gas Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) yesterday.

Mucurapo, the 2004 Zonal champions, have 30 points from 12 matches, three more than Fatima who have a match in hand.

But Fatima need to defeat QRC by at least eight clear goals tomorrow, in their rescheduled matchup at the QRC Ground, to dethrone Mucurapo.

At the muddy Fatima Ground, Kevon Piper converted an Al Mohammed left-side cross in the first minute to give Mucurapo an early initiative, with Akim Armstrong doubling the lead in the sixth, again from a Mohammed centre.

Guerra strolled through the St Mary’s defence to give Mucurapo a 3-0 lead, with Hyland shooting home a low-right footer in the 40th.

Early in the second half, Guerra tapped home into the empty net as St Mary’s goalkeeper Michael Amoroso parried a Richard Roy blast, while Hyland drilled home a Guerra pass in the 78th.

And Guerra will complete St Mary’s misery with a penalty in stoppage time.

At the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Fatima got a first half strike from Kevon Villaroel, and a second half pair from Makesi Lewis, to defeat Malick 3-0. A waterlogged outfield prevented any play between the "Westmoorings Tigers" St Anthony’s and QRC at the St Anthony’s Ground. The match has now been rescheduled for Monday. Vessigny got goals from Kegan Bacchus in the 38th minute, and Kyle Williams in the 89th as they took care of Moruga 2-0 at Vessigny.

Fyzabad was also in winners’ row, as they squeezed past Princes Town 1-0 at Fyzabad, while St Benedict’s trounced Mayaro 4-1 at the Mayaro Recreation Ground.

San Juan’s unbeaten run in the East Zone was ended by dethroned champs St Augustine, with the hosts strolling to a 5-1 triumph. The "Green Machine" got strikes from Mark Alibey, Elton John, John Stewart, Joseph Daniel and Lorenzo King, while the 2005 Zonal winners got a lone response from Anthony Guppy.

The "Dial Dynamos" Arima ended their miserable campaign on a winning note, as they got the better of Hillview 2-0 at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna.

Meanwhile, Hillview was awarded a 3-0 victory against Malabar yesterday after a successful appeal to the SSFL Disciplinary Committee. Hillview was contesting the fact that Malabar used a suspended player for their October 15 clash, which ended 2-1 in Malabar’s favour at the Tunapuna venue.

And one match was contested in the sister isle Tobago, with Signal Hill getting the better of Scarborough in a high-scoring 6-5 battle.
