Signal Hill advance to ‘Big 5’ semi-final
CAPTAIN Kareem Yearwood made a double strike as Signal Hill eliminated Presentation College of Chaguanas 2-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, in yesterday’s quarter-final of the British Gas Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) "Big 5" tournament. The lads from the sister isle will now oppose Naparima in a semi-final contest on Wednesday at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. And Mucurapo retained their SSFL North Zone crown following Fatima’s 4-2 win over QRC in a rescheduled fixture at the QRC Ground. Fatima needed to win by eight clear goals to dethrone Mucurapo as the North champions. Hosts QRC held a 2-1 halftime lead but Fatima’s captain Machel James, who got his team first item, equalised with a second half penalty. Trinidad and Tobago Under-15 striker Chad De Freitas had a hand in Fatima’s next two strikes, which were scored by Makesi Lewis and Emmanuel Joseph. Meanwhile, the sprinkling of fans at the Ato Boldon Stadium saw Presentation dominate the early stages of the first half, but the strike pair of Trent Lougheed and Dion Lewis, as well as midfielders Jesse Stewart and Marvin Manswell, failed to breach the Signal Hill’s defence. After withstanding a series of "Pres" attacks, the visitors broke the deadlock in the 77th, when substitute Roarke Benjamin headed a pass to Yearwood, who got past captain Dwayne Nicome and Isiah Smith, and drilled his left-footer home. The issue was settled in stoppage time when, on their typical counter-attacking style, Yearwood blew past Thomas and tucked his left-footed effort past Cudjoe. Also, Vessigny finished second in the South Zone after they hammered Mayaro 4-0 in Vessigny. Khalid Commissiong found the back of the net in the 12th minute before Tsion Thomas put the match beyond Mayaro’s reach with strikes in the 28th and 60th. Kareem Balthazar completed the triumph for Vessigny with an 89th minute item.
