J’cans win women’s double wicket

THE Jamaican pair of Stephanie Taylor and Chadeane Nation captured the inaugural Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Cricket Board (TTWCB) Regional invitational double-wicket tournament at the National Cricket Centre at Balmain, Couva yesterday.

The duo got the better of the Guyanese pair of Candacy Atkins and Abina Parker in the final to capture the US$250 top prize, challenge trophy and gold medals.

Guyana batted first in the four-over affair and tallied 25 runs, but had three runs deducted for losing a wicket.

Taylor and Nation saw the Jamaicans home without any trouble.

Atkins and Parker received US$150 and silver medals for the runner-up prize.

In the play-off for third place, Grenada shocked host country TT, gathering 17 and then restricting the home team to a mere nine runs.

West Indies coach Ann Browne-John, one of the organisers, said the objective of the tournament is to instill greater excitement in the game of women’s cricket and to increase the awareness among the local public of the tremendous strides that have been made in women’s cricket in the region.

Former West Indies captain Stephanie Power was the Technical Director, while Jocelyn Opadeyi was the Tournament Director.
