Manzan Netters cop Mayaro netball title
MANZAN Netters displayed excellent defence to win the opening American-style competition at the launch of the bpTT Mayaro Netball League at the Bridget Adams Court in Mayaro on Sunday. Manzan outplayed Illusions 14-8, with their scores coming from goal shoot Minerva Williams and goal attack Mirisa Williams in the ten-minute final among the senior netballers. In the "B" finals for junior players, Shockers edged Manzan junior netters 8-7 in a closely contested match. Earlier, Guaya Netter waltzed their way to first place in the March Past competition, with Illusion placing second and Mayaro Composite School, third. Special guest at the netball launch was former national star, Peggy Castanada, who took the march past, along with Councillors Matthew Pierre and Fitzroy Ottley, and Ronda Francis, bpTT External Affairs Adviser. Castanada conducted an intensive training course for 20 coaches earlier this month and is actively involved in the running of the league. In an address before the start of the competition, Councillor Pierre urged the Mayaro community to support the efforts of the Mayaro Netball Associa-tion and called on the players to display true sportsmanship at all times. Pierre congratulated energy company bpTT for their continuing support of the netball league, expressing the hope that it will sow the seeds for future national stars. League competition started on Monday with 12 teams in the competition and runs over the next two months.
