Ames 27th at Chrysler

PALM HARBOR: Trinidad and Tobago’s international golf star Stephen Ames shot a final round two under-par 69 to finish joint 27th at the US$5.3 million Chrysler Championship on Sunday.

Beginning the final round in 57th position, Ames had three birdies and finished with a one-over 285 total, ten shots adrift of the winner Carl Pettersson of Sweden. Pettersson steadied his nerves and his swing down the stretch for an even-par 71 to win his first PGA Tour title with a nine-under 275 total. American Chad Campbell returned a final round four-under 67 to finish alone in second at eight-under 276, three shots clear of a group of seven players tied for third.

Ames shot birdies at holes eight and nine and another at 14 and could have finished higher if he did not bogey at the 17th hole.

The 41-year-old San Fernando native completed his best round of the tournament Sunday — having carded previous scores of 70, 72, and 74 — and collected US$35,278 for his eighth top-30 result in 24 tournament appearances so far this year.
