Crabs stay in contention

CRAB CONNECTION stayed in contention for the 2005 Sportworld Super League football crown after a 2-1 victory over PLIPDECO Caroni at Gilbert Park, Couva yesterday.

The "Crabs" remain in second position with 46 points, two points behind leaders, "Eastern Lions" Joe Public, with both teams having three matches in hand.

Marvin Oliver put the "Crabs" ahead yesterday in the 43rd minute while Rennie Britto widened the lead to 2-0 in the 52nd.

There was some late drama as Jason Cudjoe pulled one back for Caroni in the 89th but the "Crabs" defence held firm until the final whistle.

Police dropped from third to fifth place in the 12-team standings after they were hammered 3-0 by Superstar Rangers in the first of back-to-back matches at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima.

Marlon Bowen (19th), Grayson Edwards (77th) and Akudu Goodridge (81st) got their names on the scoresheet for Rangers, who climbed to fourth place with 39 points, one more than Police.

WASA Clean & White took advantage of Police’s slip-up to move to third spot, with 40 points, after a come-from-behind 4-3 triumph over Maraval Youth Academy at the WASA Ground, St Joseph.

Alvris Faure put the hosts in front after 27 minutes but Clinton Corbin equalised two minutes later. Maraval went ahead through Sherwin Waldron in the 39th and seemed to have the match sewn up when Wesley Noreiga found the target in the 68th.

But WASA kept plugging away, and Marvin Joseph reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 75th. To the delight of the home fans, Alvin Beharry levelled the scores in the 80th and Billy Dee Scantlebury notched the winner in the 87th.

Quami Knights netted a double, in the third and 64th minutes, to secure a 2-1 victory for Couva Players United over M&M Harvard in the other fixture at the Larry Gomes Stadium. Damian Pompey got the lone strike for Harvard in the 44th.
