Shak Attack end Pacers’ run
DETOUR SHAK Attack brought an end to the unbeaten run of the Unit Trust Maloney Pacers with an 88-82 overtime victory when competition resumed in Group "B" of the Sportworld National Basketball League at the Maloney Indoor Complex on Tuesday night. Playing at home in front of a partisan crowd, Pacers, the reigning East Zone champions got off to a slow start and fell behind in the first quarter 18-14. Despite their efforts in the second period of the match the Pacers just could not stop the pace and attacks of the Detour Shak Attack outfit who also claimed that quarter 42-35. Shak Attack, the 2005 North Zone runners-up also maintained their lead in the third period of the match by beating up on their counterparts 59-56 which then set up the win in the fourth and final stanza. However it came after close battle, with Randy Harewood carrying the Pacers attack until he was injured just minutes from the end. His performance however ensured that his team finished level at 74 which took the match into overtime. But five minutes into the over-time period new signing Ashley "Dr Dunk" Bynoe outscored the home team 14-8 for the win. Bynoe led the scoring for his team with 25 points and Kirt Christian contributed 17. The Pacers were led by 23 points from Maxime Perreira and 19 by Derrick Boxhill in the losing cause. In the Women’s Division, defending champions the Unit Trust Maloney Pacers recorded their third win in as many matches, when they took care of East Zone rivals the Blue Ribbon Brian Chase Academy in a keenly contested affair 54-46. The match was the first encounter of a double-header at the Maloney Complex on Tuesday evening. The Pacers led from the start winning the first three quarters 14-10, 26-24 and 39-34 before completing the victory by eight points. Guyanese Nayota Peters led the scoring for the champions with 17 points and ten rebounds, while her teammate Carol Ann Granger contributed 11 points to the winning tally. Afeisha Noel was the topscorer for the Brian Chase Academy with 27 points.
