Stern’s boots on fire

THE EDITOR: Leo Beenhakker unwaivering faith in the highly maligned striker, Stern John, has paid dividends to the Trinidad and Tobago Football team.

The England-based striker silenced his critics scoring an aggregate of 12 goals in the World Cup qualifying campaign, powering this nation into the play-off series against Bahrain.

Surely a vast majority of people owe Stern an apology. No one perceives the pressures he encounters when he returns to his club from international duties to the extent of jeopardising his spot at his English club. Despite the dismay and the displeasure of his manager he displays priority and commitment to his country, journeying nine gruelling hours to the Caribbean to represent the Warriors.

Not surprisingly with the strong support of the globe trotting Dutchman, Leo Beenhakker, the Derby County marksman showed firm dedication and determination to the task of assisting his country to qualify for its first World Cup finals.

Amidst the jeers, the boos and the vociferous demands for his substitution by the angry and frustrated fans in the uncovered stands at the National Stadium, his resolve did not wane. Remarkably, he emerged victorious and redeemed himself on September 3.

Beenhakker’s incredible conviction in the former Coventry forward fuelled Stern’s self-belief, and renewed his scoring touch and passion for goals. Had the former Real Madrid Coach heeded the demands of the majority what would have been the fate of the team now, which is poised to claim a spot among the most prestigious football playing nations in the universe.

Once a villain; now a hero. Obviously, Stern John, the highest goal scorer for TT did not answer his critics with his mouth but sternly replied with his boots. These boots are now on fire, poised, eager and desperate to kick the fourth placed CONCACAF nation into Germany 2006.
