Captain defends WI against spin claim

MELBOURNE: West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul and media manager Imran Khan have defended the team’s ability to handle leg spin.

Shane Warne wreaked havoc in the First Test in Brisbane and Stuart McGill has also been included in the 12-man squad for the Second Test at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

"Whatever comes our way we have to try to deal with it. They are two good leggies, we have to go out there and play what we see," The Melbourne Age quoted Chanderpaul as saying.

"I thought we were Ok (against Warne in Brisbane). Nobody was too attacking, we just went after the spinners Ok. We just need to get some more runs and support the batter who is in there."

Khan said any suggestion the Windies could not play leg spin was baseless. "It is a myth we can’t play leg spin. We have three of the best players of leg spin in our batting line-up. Shane Warne took only his second five-wicket haul against us in Brisbane. It is really unfair to us," Khan argued.

West Indies begin a three-day tour match last night (Caribbean time) against Victoria seeking to rebound from the 379-run loss to the hosts in the first Test.

Chanderpaul said the team was remaining focused despite the battering.

"You’ve just got to be calm and keep talking to everyone and keep encouraging everybody to go out and get the work done," the left handed batsman said.

"It’s one match that’s gone and we’ve got to keep looking forward."
