Samuels makes new batting start

MELBOURNE: After an indifferent start to his Test career, gifted West Indies player Marlon Samuels has changed his approach to batting.

His 20 Tests to date have yielded just 896 runs and a solitary century and the First Test against Australia in Brisbane last week ended a two-year exile from the Test cricket.

"I have tried a different method now and I am trying to get a start. Patience is the most important thing in my game at the moment, which is what I am working on, to be patient and take it one step at a time," the 24-year old right-hander said in an interview with team sponsors Digicel recently.

"It’s always good to be back despite all the situations and all that has been said and done. I am looking forward to playing and I have put everything behind me and am focused on my goals."

Samuel signalled his intentions in the opening Tour match against Queensland when he slammed a magnificent 257 for the tourists, before returning to grab a five-wicket haul later in the match.

The Jamaican all-rounder said he was pleased with his performance in that match and said he had applied a more patient approach.

"It’s always important to get big scores when the team needs it and I am very happy to have gotten the highest score in the game against Queensland in Australia and my highest First Class score as well," Samuels noted.

"I was pretty happy with the way I went about scoring. It was more mature and more patient. It was a very good team effort as well with the other guys supporting me throughout and Devon getting a hundred at the top of the order leading things off."

He added: "Over the years, I was batting with tail and it is a bit hard to depend on them staying out there but now they are working hard, batting longer in nets and its wonderful to see the fast bowlers batting responsibly."
