Yorke opts out to focus on club match

SYDNEY: With Trinidad and Tobago’s qualification for the World Cup behind him, striker Dwight Yorke has already refocused on his role at Sydney FC.

The 33-year old captain turned down the opportunity to join his team-mates in celebration in Port-of-Spain, opting rather to return to his club for their match against Perth today in the Hyundai A-League.

"Making the World Cup is a dream for me and is right up there with my career highlights," Yorke told the club after arriving on Thursday night.

"To think a country of only 1.3 million people will be taking on the biggest football countries in the world is tremendous. It was a great feeling and something I am struggling to put into words."

He stressed: "But life goes on and I have a job to do at Sydney FC and it is important for me to be playing good football for Sydney FC in the A-League so I can stay focused for the World Cup."

"We have an important match on Saturday night and I want to come back and play a part."

Yorke’s fitness will be assessed by Sydney’s head coach Pierre Littbarski who will then make a determination if he will start or come off the bench.

"Dwight has had a great week and he desperately wanted to play on Saturday," Littbarski said.

"I believe he was offered the chance to go back to his home (Trinidad) but he wanted to play and that is a good sign of his commitment to Sydney FC."

He continued, "We are all very proud of what he has done to get to the World Cup and we are very happy for him. I will speak to him and then decide if he will start or if he will come into the game later."
