Offshore rigger killed in South smash-up
A-57-YEAR-OLD off-shore rigger died instantly yesterday afternoon on the Golconda Connector Road, near San Fernando, in what police described as one of the most gruesome vehicular accidents they have witnessed. Leroy Greaves of Diamond Boulevard, Union Hall, San Fernando, was driving his white Toyota station wagon along the Connector Road towards Cross Crossing at 3 pm. On reaching the traffic lights at Retrench Intersection, a police report stated, Greaves apparently lost control and slammed into an oncoming three-tonne Nissan truck. According to the report, Marcus, who was heading in the direction of the Golconda settlement, escaped with minor injuries. On impact, Greaves’ body was thrown onto the road, killing him instantly. Police said he sustained severe head injuries. The six-foot offshore rigger, who weighed approximately 300 pounds, lay flat on his face on the road bleeding profusely. One of his hands had been crushed. The driver of the truck, Anthony Marcus, emerged from his vehicle and sat next to the body in shock. Police arrived on the scene within minutes to see the wagon — a mangled wreck with its mechanical parts crushed. The wagon had been split down the centre, but the three-tonne truck was only slightly damaged. Greaves’ step-daughter arrived on the scene from home about a mile away at Union Hall, after her mother had told her that she heard that her father had been involved in an accident. An inspector of police had to restrain the woman from viewing the body. Greaves’ body was removed to the San Fernando mortuary where an autopsy would be performed on Monday. Police officers yesterday called on eyewitnesses to the accident to come forward and assist them in their investigations. Persons can contact investigating officer Cpl Gadoo of the Ste Madeleine Police Station at 653-1023 or 652-3348.
