Ramsaran: UNC’s major problem is dual leadership

CHAGUANAS MP Manohar Ramsaran has branded reports that he stormed out of an executive meeting of the United National Congress (UNC) on Wednesday night as "mischievous."

Denying that he had left the meeting because of the continued row involving the Opposition Leader position, he said, "I will not walk out of any executive meeting because I was elected by over 6,000 members of the UNC to perform a function in the party. That is precisely what I will do."

However, Ramsaran admitted that while the contentious post of UNC deputy chairman was discussed at length during a meeting of the party’s executive, he did leave the meeting early because he had a previous engagement.

Ramsaran, a former sports minister, said that the real issue which continued to threaten the Opposition party as a viable alternative to the ruling party was that of dual leadership. "The only major issue that we as a party have to solve is dual leadership," he said.

Ramsaran is one of the Opposition MPs who has been clamouring for Basdeo Panday to give up the Opposition Leader position to political leader Winston Dookeran.
