WI Board battle money crisis

KEN GORDON, president of the West Indies Cricket Board, has lamented the negative impact of the International Cricket Council’s Future Tours Programme on the Board’s finances.

He said that while long term benefits were expected from certain ICC initiatives, the Future Tours Programme had resulted in a reduction of revenue for the Board of US$8 million over the past four years.

However, Gordon said the Board was in the process of addressing the existing financial problems from several aspects.

"We have reopened discussions about this severe damage with the President and CEO of the ICC and their initial responses have been positive," Gordon said, while speaking at the Queen’s Park Cricket Club’s annual awards ceremony on Friday.

In another move to sure up the Board’s ailing finances, Gordon said they had appointed a committee comprising Grenville Phillips of Barbados, Don Wehby of Jamaica and William Lucie-Smith from Trinidad and Tobago, to review the structure of the WICB’s finances and develop creative proposals to make the WICB a viable entity.

"They have now reported and their recommendations will be presented to our executive committee," Gordon revealed.

He added that the WICB was also undertaking a comprehensive review of current expenditure and the restructuring of the organisation.

"This has been done over the past six weeks and has addressed every aspect of our operational costs," Gordon explained.

"We expect as a consequence to achieve savings of in excess of US$3 million or TT$18 million per annum."

He added: "This has meant some pain and readjustment, but you know . you cannot hope to go to heaven without dying. Still, as helpful as we expect these measures to be, they are not enough to address the multi-dimensional crisis with which we are confronted."
