Homeless mom gets shelter

"THIS IS the beginning of a new life for me," declared homeless mom Valene Lynch, as she looked on at the men constructing a home for her in Marabella. Lynch, who has been living with her baby in a car, is counting the hours until she can move into her home.

Yesterday morning, Lynch, 22, and her nine-month-old daughter Nyomi, woke up in the backseat of the blue Renault to see men digging, offloading bricks and sawing wood on a small plot of land nearby. This lifted her spirits and Lynch accepted an offer from a visitor to babysit Nyomi for the day.

Scores of people have responded since Newsday’s story of Lynch’s plight. The single mom has been living in the car for the past four weeks. She was neglected from age 17, when her mother died and when she gave birth to Nyomi, she was left to fend for herself.

With nowhere to go, Lynch sat in the abandoned car with her baby and fell asleep one day three weeks ago. When she woke up, a neighbour, Maureen Rodriguez, comforted Lynch. Lynch passed the next night in the car which became her home.

Yesterday, Sunday Newsday took foodstuff and clothing for mother and baby — all donations from members of the public.

The house is being constructed courtesy Palo Seco Agricultural Enterprises Ltd, the chairman of which is former Point Fortin Mayor Francis Bertrand. Yesterday, URP workers dug the trench and by late afternoon, concrete and bricks were seen at the site.

A relieved Lynch said, "No one to take advantage of me anymore."
