Lara’s last Australian game washed out
CANBERRA: What was expected to be triple-record holder Brian Lara’s last innings in Australia was a wash out yesterday after heavy rain forced a premature end to the West Indies cricket match against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI. The PM’s XI won by six runs on the Duckworth-Lewis scoring system after posting 316 for four in its 50 overs and restricting the West Indies to 174 for three in the 32nd over when rain saturated Canberra’s Maunka Oval. Lara was batting on 13 when the rain hit. Ramnaresh Sarwan made 90, while allrounder Dwayne Bravo remained 54 not out for the West Indies, who were swept 3-0 by Australia in the recent test series. Lara became the most prolific runscorer in test cricket when he surpassed former Australian skipper Allan Border’s 11-year-old mark of 11,174 career runs during the Third Test at Adelaide last Saturday. As he walked off the pitch not out in his last innings in a first class match on Australian soil, Lara raised his bat to salute the small but appreciative crowd who rose to their feet to give him a standing ovation as he walked off.
