Tonya wins trip to Paris
Tonya Blake is the first winner of Newsday’s Around the World competition and has won the prize of a one-week trip to Paris for two. Her entry was picked from thousands of correct ones received since the competition started on Sunday October 9, 2005. She correctly answered three questions asked: What is the most famous landmark in Paris? — The Eiffel Tower What is France’s National Day? — Bastille Day, July 14 What is the Tri Colour and when was it first used? — The National Flag of France which was used after the French Revolution in 1789. Tonya Blake is a social worker. She was educated at Spellman College, Atlanta and is now pursuing her studies in social work at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine. For the last two years she has been doing social work with the Family Planning Association and volunteer work with the Child Welfare League. Ms Blake has now joined the "Vision on a Mission", a non-profit organisation. Her desire is to do something rewarding and satisfying in life, beginning with this fabulous trip to Paris, which she has won. Her name was drawn from thousands of correct entries by auditors of Pannel Kerr Foster. His Excellency the French Ambassador, Mr Charley Causeret graciously presented her with her prize last week at Newsday’s new office at 23A Chacon Street. He congratulated her and promised to assist her with her arrangements to visit Paris. Sonya plans to go to Paris in September next year. The French Embassy is also providing the ticket from London to Paris and hotel accommodation in Paris. Also present and making presentations to Tonya, who smiled all the time, were Ms Valerie Rahaman of BWIA who are providing tickets to London and Ms Serika Khan of RBTT, who are providing spending money in Paris. Ambassador Causeret, Ms Rahaman and Ms Khan were welcomed to Newsday’s office by the Chief Executive Officer Mrs Therese Mills, who thanked them for supporting this exciting Around the World competition and in particular, the trip to Paris. She said the idea for the trip around the world originated with Newsday’s Advertising department’s sales persons, Brenda Pakeera and Allyson Joseph Grant, assisted by Diana Gopaulsingh and Dominic Hinds of the Marketing department. She said the French Embassy in Port-of-Spain through the Deputy Head of Mission, Mr Jean-Christophe Fleury had been most helpful in providing material for the three articles in Newsday from which readers were able to find the answers to the questions asked. Next stop on the "Around the World with Newsday" is New Delhi, India starting in a few weeks time with articles and information of India’s capital. This will be followed by trips to Australia, Nigeria and Hawaii. Readers are invited in the next few weeks to look out for the articles on New Delhi and to enter this exciting competition. Central Radio 90.5fm has now joined the competition as a sponsor and will be paying hotel accommodations in India, Australia, Nigeria and Hawaii. Look out for your trip to India.
