Hockeymen for world indoors


TRINIDAD AND Tobago men’s hockey team will compete at the 2006 Indoor World Cup in Vienna, Austria, by virtue of their second-place finish at the Pan American Indoors yesterday. The three-day Pan Am contest was staged at the Rim Park, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.


With the men’s finalists assured of a spot in Austria, the TT lads needed to defeat the United States in Saturday’s semi-final to secure a World Cup berth.


It was not going to be easy but, in the end, TT needed overtime to defeat the Americans 5-4.


In yesterday’s final against hosts Canada, the national team put up a brave fight but were beaten by a 5-3 margin while.


And in the third-place play-off, the Americans also needed overtime to get past Guyana 7-6.


Neighbours Canada and USA battled for the women’s gold medal, with the hosts prevailing 2-1 while the TT lasses copped bronze with an 8-0 demolition of Venezuela.
