New Diego Martin Highway by Christmas Day
WORKS AND TRANSPORT Minister Colm Imbert yesterday said he was optimistic that extension works on the Diego Martin Highway would be completed, and over the next few days, people will see the commencement of work to construct the Uriah Butler/Churchill Roosevelt Highway Interchange. Imbert said he has been closely monitoring the project’s progress, and project contractor Junior Sammy has promised to complete it by Christmas Day. While indicating that he is skeptical about the deadline being met, and is aware of problems that have delayed the project, Imbert said he believes the project "has been going on far too long to complete." "I will just keep pushing him (Junior Sammy to complete the project)," the minister said. He recalled that the ministry had issue a closure notice for part of the Wendy Fitzwilliam Boulevard to allow the contractor "complete access to the site so he could blitz it." Imbert indicated that the extended Diego Martin Highway will be opened with fully functional traffic lights and other traffic safety measures, but some ancillary works (such as drainage works) will continue. The minister also disclosed that Seereram Brothers, contractors for Phase I of the interchange, will be taking possession of land in Bamboo Settlement I this week and will begin clearing the area. Imbert added that in the coming days, people will get a better understanding of the full scope of the interchange project. Imbert said construction of Phase I of the interchange will begin by December 31.
