DPP waits on registrar in Bakr case
THE Registrar of the High Court has not yet responded to a letter from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) requesting a re-listing of the case against Jamaat al Muslimeen leader, Yasin Abu Bakr, for conspiracy to murder. Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Dr Lenny Saith, made the disclosure yesterday in the Senate in response to a question from Opposition Senator Wade Mark. Mark wanted to know why no steps were taken to reprosecute Bakr for the Movie Towne murder of Jillia Bowen in June 2003. Responding for Attorney General John Jeremie, Saith noted that the matter went to trial before High Court judge Mark Mohammed earlier this year and, on March 16, the jury failed to reach a verdict and a retrial was ordered. He said the matter has to be relisted by the registrar. He said a letter dated November 14, 2005, was sent by DPP Geoffrey Henderson to the registrar requesting that the matter be relisted, but to date the DPP had received no response.
