Christmas jail for beating wife
A MAN who beat his common-law wife because, he said, she took advantage of him, was yesterday jailed for six weeks by a San Fernando magistrate. Omardath Ramcharan, 33, of Ste Madeleine, near San Fernando, appeared before Magistrate Adrian Darmanie in the Fourth Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge of assaulting Reshma Ramkissoon on Monday December 12. Ramcharan, a mason and father of two, pleaded guilty to the charge. Darmanie heard from Sgt Floris Griffith, the court prosecutor, that Ramkissoon went to her common-law husband’s home at Train Line, Ste Madeleine, and the couple began to argue. Darmanie heard that during the argument, Ramcharan dealt Ramkissoon several blows to the face. Griffith told the court that Ramkissoon sustained injuries on her cheeks and forehead. The woman sought medical treatment at the San Fernando General Hospital and filed a report at the Ste Madeleine Police Station. Griffith said when Ramcharan was arrested, he told a police officer, "Officer, I cuff my wife because she only harassing me." Ramcharan’s attorney Frank Seepersad asked Darmanie to be lenient with his sentencing because of the history of bad blood between the husband and wife. "They had a rocky relationship," the attorney said. When asked by Darmanie to explain his actions, Ramcharan said, "My wife advantages me. She takes my money and gives it to my brother." Darmanie warned Ramcharan to control his temper and sentenced him to six weeks in jail.
