No bail for injured accused

A 28-YEAR-OLD Marabella man who sustained a bullet wound on Tuesday before he was charged with trafficking 99.7 kilogrammes of marijuana, was yesterday denied bail by a magistrate at the Siparia Court.

The charge against Insberg Warner stemmed from Tuesday’s drug bust at 2.30 am at Quinam Beach. Warner, who walked with a limp, was escorted into court where he appeared before Magistrate Rae Roopchan.

On Wednesday, Warner was discharged from the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated for the bullet wound. Yesterday, police prosecutor Sgt Trevor Bernard presented the exhibits in court — five bags containing 99 plastic packets of compressed marijuana.

Bernard objected to the accused being granted bail on the grounds that a trace had to be conducted to determine if Warner had previous convictions or pending cases.

The prosecutor also submitted that bail should be denied considering the large quantity of marijuana. Warner was represented by attorney Ramnarine Soojan Singh.

Roopchan upheld the prosecution’s objection and postponed the case to next Monday.
