Mom chopped to death by deportee
A 40-year-old woman who was chopped several times at her Nalini Street, Shirvan Drive home in Sangre Grande on Thursday night, died on her way to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. Shariza Dass Mohammed, 40, a mother of one, was sitting in a hammock at the lower part of her home when a drunken man started cursing her. She asked the man to leave her premises, but he instead armed himself with a cutlass and began chopping her on the head, right shoulder and legs. She fell off the hammock and began screaming for help. An off-duty officer responded and prevented the man from continuing to chop Mohammed. The woman was rushed to the Sangre Grande Hospital where she was treated. While being transported to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, Mohammed succumbed to her injuries. Her death has pushed the murder toll for the year to 366. The 20-year-old son of the dead woman, Zaheer Mohammed, described his mother as a nice, humble person. He added that she was looking forward to Christmas and now all plans have been dashed with his mother’s brutal murder. Residents of Shirvan Drive said they had complained to the police about the threats made by the suspect, but nothing was ever done. They described the 29-year-old suspect as a deportee from Canada. The suspect was still being detained at the Sangre Grande Police Station up to late yesterday. Visiting the scene were Insp Fermin Roy, acting Cpl Jerry Dillon, PCs Ken Rampersad and Neil Rampersad, and a police photographer.
