TT women cricketers finish in style

NEWLY-CROWNED West Indies Cricket Board Under-23 Women’s cricket champions, Trinidad and Tobago, ended their campaign on a winning note while Guyana picked up their second win in the final round of matches yesterday. While TT handed Jamaica a six-wicket defeat at the University of West Indies grounds in St Augustine, Guyana disposed of the West Indies Developmental XI by nine wickets in a lopsided affair. At Inshan Ali Park in Preysal, there was no play in the match between dethroned champions St Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados because of rain. The homesters again had the benefit of good weather as they cruised past the Jamaicans in the encounter which was reduced to 30 overs because of a soggy outfield.

Having already assured of the title, after their fourth round victory against Barbados at Munroe Road on Friday, the TT women restricted Jamaica to 77 for eight in the allotted 30 overs, with Stephanie Taylor and Nickeisha Francis both topscoring with 12 runs apiece. Lee-Ann Kirby was the leading bowler with two for 13. Devika Singh then struck a brisk 28 as TT cantered to 79 for four in 21 overs. She was named “Player of the Match.” At Munroe Road Recreation Ground, Guyana routed the West Indies Developmental XI for 38 in 38 overs with Indomattie Goordial picking up four wickets for four runs, and Joanne Vansertenra capturing three for nine. The Guyanese reached their target in 12.3 overs for the loss of one wicket with Triholder Marshall topscoring with 14. The WICB Under-23 women’s tournament concludes today with a friendly match among members of the teams that participated in the tourney. An Under 21 squad is expected to be named to begin training for a tournament scheduled for India next June. (CMC)
