Falkirk want to sign Yorke

A DAY AFTER Falkirk manager John Hughes praised new addition Densill Theobald, reports coming out of Scotland indicate that Trinidad and Tobago captain Dwight Yorke could be set for a dramatic signing at the Scottish Premier League club alongside Russell Latapy. Yorke, fresh from appearing at the FIFA World Club championship with Sydney FC, could see the new move as the perfect one for him ahead of next year’s World Cup in Germany. Both Yorke and Latapy, the two veterans of the Soca Warriors line-up will be hoping to end their careers in fine style on the world stage. Falkirk  Chairman Campbell Christie admitted that his club is looking at the possibility of snapping up Yorke. A delegation from Falkirk came to Port-of-Spain to view the 1-1 draw with Bahrain and also travelled on the charter for the return leg 1-0 win in Manama during which time they met up with the players including Yorke.

“Other clubs may have more money to spend than Falkirk, but we are very close to the Trinidad football scene,” said Christie. “It will be up to John Hughes, but Dwight Yorke is someone I am sure we would be interested in bringing to Falkirk. I certainly would not rule it out. Chris Waddle and Mo Johnston signed for Falkirk, so why not?” Meanwhile, Hughes was delighted with signing Theobald who is set to leave for Scotland in the first week of January. “Densil is only 23, a non-stop talker and has a smile like Yorkie. He wants to play football, is comfortable on his left foot or right and we could hardly get him off the training ground when he was over here,”  said Hughes, who came to Trinidad in 1999 with Hibernian. “I asked Russell if he was better than we’ve already got and he thinks he is. He doesn’t think we’ll be able to hold him back and that can only increase competition for places in the squad. He can play anywhere across the midfield and has a wee bit of Yorkie about him to tell you the truth, even though he doesn’t play in that goalscoring position,” he said.

“But when I saw Yorkie play recently in the World Cup qualifiers he was playing wide left and I see that as a role Densil can fill as he can break from midfield and score goals. The board have come up trumps again and Densil will be the first of up to four new players we hope to bring in during the window,” Hughes said. “He has come to us through Russell, who has proved he has a good eye for a footballer. He can also play in behind the strikers, though I think that’s the position big Marvin Andrews plays for his national team,” the Scotsman added.

Theobald spent part of Thursday evening on the Brian Lara Promenade posing for photos on request of a couple media houses in Scotland after the news broke of his new signing. The Scottish Sun is expected to carry a full spread on the player from Nelson Street, Port-of-Spain. “It’s delightful news at the moment and I want to say a special thanks to Russell for making this possible for me and my entire family, friends and teammates and especially my mom who passed away earlier in the campaign,” Theobald said. “Hopefully things will work out fine and I can get across there and settle into the team and get myself in top shape before we head of for  preparations before the World Cup,” Theobald said.
