Alutrint, CMEC spur La Brea football

IT WAS an evening of great celebration at the La Brea Community Centre on Tuesday, as the La Brea Community Football League held their 2005 end-of year awards ceremony. Secretary of the League , former national player Larry Joseph  told the packed audience that because of the sponsorship of Alutrint Ltd, the La Brea League now had the biggest prize money among community leagues in the country. A total of $30,000 in cash prizes was presented during the evening’s proceedings with Alutrint providing  $25,000 for the “Big Four” and Lake Asphalt donating  $5,000 towards the Knockout competition. The big winner was La Brea Bosnia United  and they took home a first prize of $10,000 and the Mikey Lambert Memorial trophy.


Second place medals and $7,000 cash prize winners went to Stoke City from Gonzales Village while Vance River United captured the third place prize of $4,000. The awards were presented by Alutrint’s Project Manager Philip Julien who took the opportunity to pledge his company’s continuing support for sport and education in La Brea. Julien also presented cash incentives for outstanding performances during the season. Among them were Adrian Barriteau of Stoke City who was adjudged the best goalkeeper while the most goals award was shared by Ashley Adams of Egypt United, Jimmo Harper of Stoke City and former national youth striker Andre Alexis of La Brea Bosnia. Sydney Shade of Stoke City was voted as the best coach and received a cash prize of $400. The “Most Valuable Player” (MVP) award went to Chad Joseph of Mixed Generation. The knockout winners were Stoke City with Sobo Village as the runners-up. The awards were presented by Lake Asphalt’s General Manager, Wayne Wood at the ceremony.


A major highlight of the evening was the selection of the Alutrint La Brea All Star team, which will play a series of friendly matches against the country’s top football teams in the new year. Each member received an equipment bag and a pair of track shoes donated by CMEC International of China. Hong Xue Jun, a senior manager with CMEC, distributed the prizes. CMEC International will be working with Alutrint in the establishment of an aluminium complex at La Brea. Hong also presentd an award to Tony Rougier for his contribution to the Soca Warriors saying that he was extremely pleased to learn that the defensive midfielder has been playing professionally in China. Awards were also presented to Avery John who hails from Vance River and Kenwynne Jones who grew up in nearby Sobo Village. Jones’ father Pamphille received the award on his behalf. President of the La Brea League, Winston Sinclair closed off the ceremony by assuring the players and the clubs that there will be even more prize money at stake in 2006.
